My '73 Chieftain came originally equipped with a 4000 watt Onan that was pulled by one of the PO's.

I have a line on a 5000 watt Onan from another RV and was wondering if there would be any issues with my old wiring, inverter, etc. in using the increased wattage unit.

Does anyone have any experience or insight on this kind of change?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Assuming that they both generated 120 volt single phase power, the unit with more capacity would work fine. I am assuming you know the 5kw unit is about the same size at the old one, and will fit in the 'bay'. If the 5 kw unit was set up to generate 230 volts as well as 120 volts, then you would need to be careful about how you wired it.
One thing to think about, is how much heavier the 5 kw is than the 4 kw was; and whether the genset bay in your WInnie is going to be strong enough. It probably will be, but its something to keep in mind. Especially if there is lots of rust down there.
