Any Other Radio/Ham Operators Here?
« on: December 16, 2020, 11:04 PM »
I am a Ham operator with a soft spot in my heart for CB radio, too.  I've collected CB equipment over the years, and enjoy using my CBs from time to time.  I also collect old computer equipment, but that is a subject for a different post.

Anyone else here like to talk CB or Ham equipment?  Do you have any installed in your old Winnies?

Hi Tom,

I too am a ham and have incorporated the hobby into my 1975 D25 Indian.  I have an old Johnson Messenger with the actual phone handset attached with Velcro to the dash so I can hear the truckers yelling at me for going too slow.  :D  Below that is a dual band Icom.  Each radio has RG-58 running to their respective antennas on opposite mirror mounts.

I've converted one side of the bedroom into an office/ham shack and have a Kenwood TS-440S for HF.  I've run LMR-400 to a plastic junction box on the roof with PL-259 connectors.  From there I have a short run of coax to a MFJ Ham Stick mounted on the luggage rack.  I currently have ham sticks for 20 and 40 meters.  Planning to get another for 75.  I have run 2 gauge wire from the house battery (2 golf carts) to the Kenwood so that I don't have to carry a power supply.  I use an MFJ battery booster to keep the radio happy from the voltage drop on transmit.  With this setup I can run a full 100 watts from the radio no problem, and I'm very happy with the setup.  I also have a tuner and computer interface and enjoy using WinLink to send emails when I'm outside cell range!

NICE...So people still use these? I thought about adding a CB to my motorhome for fun and maybe in case for safety reasons.

I like the CB. You can get road info from the trucks you're meeting.

Hi Tom,
I Still have a box full of CB's on the self, but work 450 most of the time from the Winnie.
I have a tri-band mounted behind the cup holder.

Would love to still talk on 11 meters, but too many potty mouths to turn it on anymore with family along.
