I'm installing a winch on my carhauler that gets pulled behind my MH. My carhauler has the standard 7 pin round plug and the dealer told me to tap into the charge wire for the breakaway battery to charge the battery for the winch. I'll also be installing a small solar panel on top of the toolbox to maintain the battery when not in use.

So here's my question. I know I'll have to use the charge controller between the solar panel and winch battery but how do I keep the power in the winch battery from back feeding into the breakaway battery? I'm guessing some sort of diode setup or a relay but not sure.

Thanks!

Get rid of the breakaway battery and wire it to the winch battery. No need for both.

In some states they require the breakaway battery to be totally separate from any other source.
