It's been a years of a project, Labor of love. Here is my first RV as I have been in the service industry most of my life. I have always been attached to Nelly my 1974 Winnebago Indian. I traded for Nelly 17 years ago.. Nelly loved to travel to Silver Lake Sand Dunes most weekends thru the summers for 7 years. Then to Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone with my Father in law and his buddy and several camping trips to Potato Creak State Park in Indiana. Nelly has had several updates done over the years and the final renovation was started almost 36 months ago.
Here is a sample of some of Nelly's renovations. I will post more specific photos as completion proceeds.
We are requesting to be invited to Winnebago National Rally in Iowa this year.. Anyone that can help us display Nelly at national WIT would be a huge help.
We will be traveling to Michigan Wit this Sat.. And also to Newmar Rally in Michigan u p.
and a good chance of going to Monaco rally in CoosBay Oregon and the FMCA International Rally in Oregon in 2014.
She is a beauty and was on display at FMCA and Fleetwood Rally in Goshen last week.. People were blown away.. some coming back for more.. When was the last time 15 adults were in a 23' 1974 motorhome.. with room to pass.
:)clap

Awesome! More pics please.
That is Awesome. I think it's cool to see an old classic get a neat modern upgrade!!!
Welcome and nice work! More details on how you did the slide out would be great.
I have always wondered if adding a slide out from a donor travel trailer or RV would be feasible. I figured it would if the surrounding structure was sufficiently beefed up to handle the stress of a large hole cut into the side. I'd love to see detailed information on that part of your upgrade, as I have a RV that I might consider doing as well.
I notice too, the outer skin has been replaced with smooth fiberglass sheets. We had a member here who also had that done to theirs (LJ/TJ), but yours is only the second one I've seen done that way. I do like the look the smooth surface gives, and it's a lot easier to lay graphics on without all those ridges and valleys.
How did you attach the fiberglass sheets? Did you peel off the metal siding or leave it? Or did you just build all new sides? The one LJ/TJ had, was a thin layer of Lauan stuck right over the metal siding, on the lauan they glued the fiberglass.
"The one LJ/TJ had, was a thin layer of Lauan stuck right over the metal siding, on the lauan they glued the fiberglass."
Hmm, so that's how it was done... And all these years I thought they had reskinned or rebuilt the walls entirely.
Yup, Dad and I took a close gander at it one year at the jam, we had intentions of doing the same thing with a slide out as well, but then I got all goofy and bought the bigger rig. ;)
SWEET!!! Patti would like a slide on our HR to increase the living room/kitchen size. How did you do it?
Kev
When we do aftermarket slide-outs the exterior or interior wall is opened up and the sidewall reinforced with steel, alum, or wood depending on existing wall construction etc. The slide-out box is then mfg to the hole opening useing a patented slide out four gear slide system ordered in by hole size. This is my 74 Aftermarket Slide conversion since 1998 and I/my shop repairs/rebuilds 100's yearly. I would trust my Grand Children in my Slide-Out conversions.

That's the inside of a Classic Winnebago? Are you kidding me! Geessss don't let the wife see that. Sweet. :)ThmbUp
Double slides! You do very nice work. :)ThmbUp
Please keep posting as you complete the transformation.
Since this project is the kind of work the member does for a living, providing instruction on how it's done may well be giving away his "trade secrets" and think we can all see why it would be quite understandable for him to reserve sharing the details. Although his project blog is general in nature rather than a detailed, how to build a slide-out project blog, I will be still be leaving it on this board since it is a very special and highly desireable modification for those who would like to see it they could do it.
So, anyone who may have information on how to actually do this project may certainly post their info on this topic.
I hope I haven't offended anyone with this post and if it seems unclear in any way, please feel free to state what isn't clear and I will try my best to further explain the reasoning.
D:oH!
My husband has been begging for a slide. I'd like to see prices to have this done.
Oh, about $5,000 for a small bare-bones one... and up... easily $15,000 or more for two, nice full length ones but, that's pocket change for us vintage RVers... I'll take 3 or 4, maybe even keep on more for a spare...
:)rotflmao
Is that all well sign me up for 2 full length ones, lol
Yes due to problems with the original alum sidewalls pin holes etc. I did not want to go to the extreme renovation with full body paint to have alum failures in the future.
Nice work, I own a 1974 D-19 and will be interested in having major renovation performed in a couple of years. What is the scope of your shops work? Thanks, Chris

GOOD LORD! Words have yet been created to describe the beauty of that rig. Well, well done. My dream rig. What did you use for wheels and were did you get them if you don't mind me asking. Sweet. D:oH!
Excellent workmanship.
Dave
WOW!!
In my dreams WOW :)clap
I was good until the paint job.
Classic lines of the coach should have been preserved in a modern style. Updated yes, but its not a Prevost.
Guess I should have watched it last night, it's gone now. :( Rick
Oh Man! Lucky me I copied it to my computer before it went MIA. I don't know if one of our computer guys can re-capture it some how and re post it,but it's definitely worth keeping on the site. It's a great piece. Man.
WOW, He posted it yesterday and removed it yesterday. Guess he doesn't want the business. Or Winnebago didn't like their promo being used in his ad. Which is probably more like it. Copywrite infringement.
He may not have removed it. YouTube will sometimes remove them on there own if they feel it is copy right infringement. That would be my guess. I hope if that's the case he'll re-post it with out the Winnebago reference. All we do is promote Winnebago and they get their nose out of joint. Go figure.
:)rotflmao Ok! ok! I finally have a criticism. I've had a chance to critically study the video very, very carefully. MUD FLAPS after all that hard work and you chintzed on the mud flaps. Man I love your rig. BUT WHAT TIRE SIZE did you use and were and what rims did you use. Thanks :)ThmbUp
Hey MTRV you still out there? Any chance we can pick your brain on a few of your ideas and how you went about your project. I'd like to know what rims you used and who you purchased them from. Did you glue your siding over the old aluminum or did you peel it off and then apply the new siding. I captured your video and was able to study it frame by frame and MAN you do nice work. Well done. She's beautiful. :)ThmbUp
His last visit was on 7/1 so he's still out there.
http://www.mastertechrv.com/winnebago.html <---here he is!
Holy WOW
I know I captured all his pictures to study. Man there is so much to learn and so many little tricks with the siding and a million questions. Now all we got to do is get him to talk to us. D:oH! However if he reads this. Thanks for all the picks and the work on the rig. It's fantastic. :)ThmbUp

awesome. I finally :)ThmbUp got to see the finished product. Just stunning.
Wow !! Just wow :)clap :)clap :)clap

Awesome trip, dude. ... Love the old commercial too... Would be nice if you dropped some knowledge someday about how you added slideouts... but either way, have a safe trip!
And I was curious, what's in the horse trailer?
:)
On the walls. We completely removed the old walls, rebuilt the walls from scratch in-house. Laminated fiberglass to the wall in our fiberglass department. Then on the Roof we took the roof off and rebuilt the roof from scratch also. When it comes to Slide-outs, walls and or even roofs, Master Tech RV is the one stop RV Shop to get all your dreams to become a reality. Anyone wanting estimate on anything send us a email to sales@mastertechrv.com :) :)ThmbUp

Our Slide-outs:
Basic Slide-out: 1,000.00 - 1,500.00 per running foot.
Kitchen Slide-out: 2,0000 - 2,500.00 per running foot.
And they can go up from there.. :)

Classic lines of the coach should have been preserved in a modern style. Updated yes, but its not a Prevost.
The reason behind the paint design is because we use the winnebago to display the type of workmanship that we do to any RV. We bring the winnebago to every FMCA Rally to show the type of workmanship that Master Tech RV can do to any motorhome. At every Rally it is the hit of the entire show.

When we first uploaded the video to youtube there were some errors in the video that we had to fix so here is the video link

@mtrv when you rebuilt the walls what did you use. did you stud frame the walls 2x4 16" on center or did you redo the factory method with w!f!f Wood ! Foam ! Fiberglass
I would use steel studs...lighter, stronger...and would turn em so they were 2" thick and then spray foam or rigid insulate just what I would/will do
Amazing work!!!
Do you guys upholster old 1975 Winnebago bucket seats? If so minus the material ABOUT how much would it cost to do two seats? If a person dropped them off how long would it take? If you don't do seats can you recommend a shop that you would do business with. Hm?
TJ, If you are directing that to MTRV I see they have not been on here since Nov. 2014. You might want to track them down through a web site or Google them.
Yeah, Thanks Rick. I couldn't remember the last time I'd herd from them and was taking a shot in the dark. D:oH!
If you click on a username it brings up all their info and the last time they visited.
Thanks Mate. :)ThmbUp
Any automotive or marine reupholstery shop should be able to make your seats like brand new for a good price. I'd check out your local shops.
Kev
That's the problem, they talk a good game. They charge Cadillac prices and produce shoot. That's why I'm looking State side. I'd sooner pay a little more by a good shop and have the job done right. Not that I can afford it but if it's done right the first time it's cheaper. D:oH!
t-j / is right! up in our neighborhood they talk a good game=promise u the moon=take forever & deliver substandard workmanship & of course the old =its going to cost u more, cuz we didn't figure it would take so much time
Around my way I can get good work from the upholstery shops but MAN! are you going to pay for it! The government was auctioning off industrial sewing machines a few years ago for pennies on the dollar but I missed out on them when the prices were good. Now when they do still have one the prices are about what you would pay retail. I want to get one and do my own work. You can learn anything on You Tube with a little common sense thrown in.
