Title: Brake/Steering problem
Post by: Oliver GER on July 28, 2021, 01:50 PM
Hello a friend has a 2000 Chieftain P30 Chassis. When he brakes the steering is hard-binding.
He has exchanged the hydroboost and the servo pump but remains the problem. He has already exchanged the steering gear box with simular
someone may have an idea?

Hi, we are facing the problem. If I use the brake there is no power steering.
Dos anyone has a clue?

If the brakes are tied in with the power steering, then the issue should be from the power steering pump to the booster.

When you loose steering while braking there is either a air somewhere in the system or the Hydroboost unit is opening the dump valve while braking and not allowing high pressure fluid to the steering gear.

You got new hoses as well?

Get the old fluid out and new fluid in (check on the year, every generation needs something differently),  and get it bleed (20 turns left and right - full end to end).

Thx,
More or less everything is replaced and the problem remain. We will try an other steering gear box. We used one for a test that was working fine but steers in wrong direction (steering wheel left, tires right  🤔🤦)

Is the Vectra a Diesel Pusher?
Are you certain that you got the high flow Powersteering Pump?    You must have very long lines going to the steering box.

At least at the Gasoline Engines there are two versions of the Pump.  The look exterior identical and but you need the one with higher flow and pressure.

Have you tried putting it in neutral -revving up the engine and then braking + steering?

If it's working while high RPM, the pump is not supplying enough fluid.

Hi, the Vectra is not the problem. It is a P30 6.5td Chieftain from 2000. Owned by a friend.

then there is a good chance of a wrong pump.
IF he just replaced with the same model - might be still the wrong one.

My 350 came with wrong spark plugs - to short, if I would just have replace them with the same kind - would be still not running good.

Do not every assume with those old RVs that what is currently is in there - is correct.
They came sometimes with the wrong parts from the factory :P

Hi, we exchanged the steering box ,now. We have an new issue jet. If the motor is running the steering wheel is shaking you can't hold it

The wheel shaking can be air in the system

So finally we made it.
The problem could not be eliminated with the new installed steering gear.  We rebuilt the Puscher steering gear, swapped the piston and shaft to changed the direction of rotation.  Now the steering is working fine again
