Title: 24K plugs
Post by: udidwht on January 31, 2021, 07:24 AM
These are the plugs (AC Delco copper) I pulled out of my 1994 Fleetwood Southwind Storm 28ft 454 TBI w/4L80E trans. I installed them after purchasing the RV in Sept. 2014 with just shy of 45K miles on the OD. I had also installed new Belden Edge premium wires then as well. I did not have luck in getting all the wires off successfully. The wire for cylinder #8 broke off about 1/2in from the end of the boot (all the way around). So new wires with new plugs as well. Had even used Super lube in the end of the boot when I installed them.

Went with Autolite copper plugs and Belden heavy duty (ceramic boot) 8.5mm wires.

Here's what the plugs look like after 24K....(They look surprisingly well given the hard life they live in these BBC motors. The gaps were all .036 originally at .035. I'm going to let the Autolite plugs run 35K. Runs beautiful. On my recent trip (prior to plug/wire change) from Renton, Wa. to Laughlin, Nv. - Sedona, Az - Hunt. Bch, Ca then back home I averaged a low of 7.2 mpg and a high of 9.2mpg. Actually hitting the 9mpg range 3 times during the whole trip of 3099 miles. That was just before the new wires and plugs went in (after returning home).

The ignition system is in top shape after haven replaced everything except for the actual distributor itself. Replaced all with the following:

1. Ignition coil - Delco
2. Distributor cap - Delco
3. Rotor - Delco
4. Pick up coil - Delco
5. Wires - Belden Heavy duty ceramic
6. Plugs - Autolite coppers
7. ICM - Delco
8. Examined the distributor thoroughly while out. Also cleaned it well.
