Title: Propane smell from water heater while off
Post by: Xjsport95 on May 20, 2020, 12:01 AM
My water heater makes a loud pop then the jet engine sound when it lights... Iââ,¬â,,¢ve recently noticed when it is off I get a whiff of propane from the exhaust on the wh... Iââ,¬â,,¢m assuming the control valve is failing... if there any way to ââ,¬Å"tune upââ,¬Â the valve or do I just need to replace it?

Have you cleaned out the burner tube? They get filled with rust and mud dauber wasps and that can cause all kinds of gas issues with starting. If you are smelling the gas right after it shuts down you may just be smelling the normal exhaust, especially if it is running rich from being partially clogged.

Mix up some soapy water in a spray bottle and start spraying all of the propane connections, look for bubbles. You need to follow the lines all the way through the coach since the leak can be anywhere. Most propane lines will run outside except where they come in to go to the appliance like the heater and stove.
