I need to know if this engine is a 318, a 360, or a 440.  I have only seen picutres, and I need to get tune up parts for it so I can attenpt to get it running when I go look at it.  It is in a 76 Dodge Chassis about 20 22 feet long.  Thank you for any help.

If the distributor is at the front of the motor it is a big block mopar, which means a 400, 413, 426 or 440. Only the 413s and the 440s went into motorhomes as far as I know, and the 413s werent used after 73. So unless someone has swapped it out, it should be a 440 if the dist. is at the front. But it looks as narrow as a 318, compared with the size of the engine access hole. I don't know how to tell a 360 from a 318, and 76/77 was about when they switched to the 360. If the 5th digit of theVIN is an A, that means 440-3, an N = 413-1, a G = 318-3. The 440 engine size is supposed to be on a flat surface of the block, underneath the distributor. How is anyone supposed to be able to see that! On the 318 is it cleverly hidden on the front of the block, just below the head, passengers side I think. I believe the 440 exhaust manifolds come out above the spark plugs, vs the 413s which come out below the plugs. The 440 manifolds arent the same left and right, like the 413s are. Be sure to take an old spark plug with you to get new ones - different heads have turned up on 440s in motorhomes, with totally different spark plugs! good luck denison

dave, did you look at the attachment picture i had on the message.  the distributor IS at the front of the engine. I am getting the VIN from the guy in the next couple days.  So the 360 has a rear mounted dist like the 318?  Thanks for your help

Eric - In 76 I believe they only used the 440 3 and the 360 3  - the distributor is in fact in the back of the engine on the 360 and front for 440 .  Ive seen info in some of my dodge manuals that stated engine ID under the distributor on 440 and couln't find it - another manual stated it was on top ajasent to the left tappet rail - thats where I found it - It's just to the right of the front right corner of the left valve cover  -but when he sends you the Dodge VIN it should help - Sea Hag
