Title: Replace your old wiper blades with an adapter to use modern blades.
Post by: xerofall on June 16, 2014, 09:27 PM
I have a 1973 Winnebago that still had the original blades that required a lot more work to replace than what we're used to now-a-days. So I searched the internet and found this...

You have to buy two. (I assumed they were sold in pairs, but nope, haha)

For my RV I simply removed the old blade and used the same nut and bolt (didn't use the new hardware that came with the adapter) and used the same hole location. Very easy upgrade. Now I can use the simple modern blades. Figured you'd like to see.

I still have to do the driver's side, I will take more pictures at that time.

Close ups of how it attaches to the arm and the blade would be good.

I did the same thing, using the original screw hole in the arm only I didn't use any adapter.  I just took off the old blades, slid the new ones on using one of the generic adapters already in the wiper arm package and put the OEM screw and nut on.

TJ also posted a topic on this previously using an adapter from Anco:

All kinds of creative ways to do things simply and cheaply.  That's the cool thing about our little "think tank".  LOTS of very resourceful people here making the most of it!

Finally got my Brave back and got some better pics of the wiper blade adapter process...

Old wiper...

Loosen this nut...

Keep the nut and washer...

Unscrew the part on the wiper blade itself, the piece in my hand is the only part you'll keep. (In addition to the nut and washer from before.)

There's a circular bit that you can spin out of the way or leave it, I left mine in place.

I used the center hole on the adapter.

Reuse the post, washer and nut, easy as pie...

Snap on the new blade...

What you did was use an adapter to replace the standard truck blades with an automotive blade. Rock Auto sells the Trico 68241 24" truck blades for $1.29 each no adapter necessary and heavy duty too. (I bought 10)

Silly question, but what blades did you use?

I upgraded my attachments as well so it can accept modern wipers.  BUT, all the wipers that fit my window are "Pre curved" and dont make flush contact.  The springs on the wiper arm are not strong enough to offset the pre bend on the wiper.  So I only get the top and bottom wiped.

I found these wiper arm helper springs at Canadian Tire in Whitehorse, Yukon this summer. http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/surewipe-universal-093-wiper-arm-spring-0210417p.html

Can be found here in the states on Amazon. Search for Surewipe UNI-093.

You don't want to get too much pressure on them or you will burn up the wiper motor.

I had "no pressure". What good are wiper blades if they don't touch the glass?

I read this as using an adapter so you can use automotive blades where a truck blade originally was used. Now it won't clear the window? It's a truck blade on there originally for a reason...think about it

Bill,

Not sure who you are replying to, but in my case didn't matter which blade is on my arms, the springs are so weak it can't hold the blades to the glass.
