I recently purched my 1972 D-20 and while driving it home the trans would slip or hesitate between 2nd & 3rd gear. Is this a common problem? Is this an easy fix? Any help would be appreciated.

If the kickdown is misadjusted, this is a created symptom.
If the bands are out of adjustment, it can also cause this. (slightly more involved fix, have to drop the trans pan and change the filter while you're at it..)

There is always a slight 2-3 upshift delay, a lot of times it goes unnoticed.

My bet is that your shift down linkage is misadjusted or even not connected?

Also before you think its going to be expensive, you might want to drop the tranny oil pan, and change the fluid, replace the filter.  With the pan off you can make one of the two adjustments.  The other adjustment can be made from the outside of the tranny.   A description of how to make the adjustment was posted within the last year, in the engine/trans  message category.     Your tranny fluid should be a deep pink.   I have seen fluid that was almost as dirty as engine oil - having never been changed in 30 years!
