Title: Socket Size for 77 Chieftain front hub removal?
Post by: gmiller442 on October 05, 2009, 04:30 PM
Hi All!

I have a 77 Chieftain with the M400 chassis and I am I need of removing the front hubs for service. What size socket do i need to remove cap over spindle nuts and bearings?  It is huge...around 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches. Also, does the cap thread on or does it just push on?

Thanks,

As far as the bearing dust cap goes, once you get the tire off you should be able to use a screw driver to pry it off. I have a M-300 but this is what worked for me. The two bolts for the brake caliper are 15/16". To remove the spindle, it requires a 1 1/2" socket. I couldn't find a spindle wrench of that size but the 'Great Necks' socket I bought worked perfectly. Hope that helps some what...
