I guess my 318 isn't a 318 after all -it's a 360 block!

I purchased the Brave last summer and hadn't had much time to work on it until now. When the throttle broke and I started looking at fixing it, things just weren't adding up. I started to dig into the project. I crawled under it and found this

:)ThmbUp  Yep! That's going to be a big help now you know you own a 360 D:oH!

A 4006630 is a 440 and a 4006530 is a 400 but there is no record of a 4006830.  I am not so sure the 360 suffix means it is a 360.

A little more research tells me it is a 360 motorhome engine from around 73-75. The same engine was used in the Cordoba and similar cars with a two barrel carb. I had one of those cars, not bad but not exactly a powerhouse either.  It is probably the original engine in there unless you have paperwork stating otherwise.

All good info. Thanks. This 360 is running a 4bbl and has a date code stamped on it of 3-3-78.
I didnââ,¬â,,¢t know they even offered the 360 in the 73 18ââ,¬â,,¢ Brave. I thought only 318 or 440. Maybe 413?

I can't help you there, I just researched the Dodge engine and I remember working on them in my shop. Dave is the Dodge Motor home goto guy on here.

Now that you know that remember it for when you need parts that it's for a 78 360, but everything else is 73. Good Luck

LA 360 is a good engine, have one in my '89 dump truck, you can go from carb to TBI pretty easily by pulling the TBI setup off of mid to late 80s trucks and vans that have the 360.

Rickf1985

The TBI 360's I worked on were total dogs! We had several snowplows with them and they could not plow even medium wet snow where the older and newer trucks had no issues at all. Now the MPI 360 is another animal altogether, they are very powerful engines. But like any Mopar engine they are thirsty.

Starting point: Find the Dodge VIN number plate and decode it.

Well I crawled under it again and could make out most of the # stamped in frame, which is completely different than the VIN # by drivers seat. According to the G in the frame # looks like it was originally a 318-3. Thanks for the link!

:) Keep crawling.....we'll get her history figured out.

Scotty76

well that is odd you have a 73 and mine is a 76 brave 21
with the same block #4006830-360 which i could not find a match
the production date on my block is 30-10-75
the stamp on the front of the head says 360 i was told the engine had been changed in mine  how they were able to find a year and block vin that matches is lucky
but braves never came with a 360  lol

legomybago

The 360 is a direct bolt in upgrade replacement for the 318. That is why you guys have them. That is a route I would maybe go if I had a tired 318, rather then trying to swap a 440.
Never get crap happy with a slap happy pappy

Hey how's it going! I'm new here. Just trying to sift through all the valuable information.
I use the decoding Key you provided!! Can anyone confirm I decoded correctly
The 5th letter K indicates I have a 360-3 2bbl

thanks in advance and I look forward to being apart of this community.

DaveVA78Chieftain

Yep, you got it correct,  79 M400 with a 360-2bbl.
