If you puchase the Dodge Service Manual from our site store you will see the original carb was a 4 barrel Holley.

gas fouled, brown hard clumping around the electrodes from excessive fuel, rather than the black oily/greasy from bad control rings, and little loss of oil from crankcase

I have the dodge m500 service manual on disk, it shows both the carter thermoquad and the holley

Thermoquad has a phenolic plastic center section. Pretty distinctive.

Pull the air cleaner off and clean around the side of the carburetor, the model number should be stamped on the side.  If it is a Carter it should be quite visible

Real simple to determine what carb was used where
In the service manual, refer to the spec pages at the rear of Group 14 - FUEL SYSTEM.

318 - Carter BBD 2 barrel
413 - Holley 4 barrel
440 - Thermoquad spreadbore
