Heh guys,

Dan and I bought a new (to us) car today. We plan on driving it daily just because of gas prices, and it will be cool. But we also plan to use it as a toad. We bought an 89 VW Cabriolet convertible. Compared to our Suburban we figure we should have it paid for in gas alone in about a month...lol. It was really weird going to the gas pumps and filling the car full with ten gallons.

The only issue we see is that the car is an automatic, but after so many knee surgeries, a standard is not always the best. We have heard of a quick disconnect for the driveshaft. Do any of you know of this? Better yet, do any of you know where we can get this? Help!!!!

Tam;

The quick disconnect is for a vehicle that is rear wheel drive, like a 2 wheel drive pickup truck. After doing a little research it appears that you will need to get something called a "lube pump" for your cabriolet. The pump insures that you will not burn out the transmission on the car when towing. There are cars that you can tow without damaging the transmission, the VW is not one of them. Check out www.Towingworld.com or www.blueox.us for more info on toads. PS How is Dan feeling?

Tam,
Find a Cheeep tow dolly,
You can get them for $500- $1000 and would be perfectly suitable and safer than dragging the Cabrio on all fours.

of course, you might even find a used one somewhere?

The web site for the Remco driveshaft-disconnect-goody lists their product for varioius Ford and Chevy models, but nothing for VW's. With the Remco disconnector, you buy a replacement (modified) axle shaft from them, and install it or have it installed in your car. And their prices "....start from as low as $549.xx. ".
While a tow dolly requires to you get down near the ground for strapping/unstrapping, at least the tow dolly will accomodate most any car - handy for hauling parts cars home or the carcass to the scrapyard.
