Title: Dodge 318 Gas to diesel engine swap?
Post by: mike roy on June 14, 2011, 12:07 PM
Is there anyone that has done a switch to a diesel in a D-22? at present I have a LA 318 and would like to switch. I have heard of a possible engine from an m-37 military that might fit up to the 727 auto trans but must do more research to find out if this exist! all and any help is welcome. Thanks to all. You might want to look into some of the Dodge Ram Charger forums, its pretty common for those boys to swap them out with a cummins.   A good swap would be a late 80s or early 90s cummins w/out the computer controls.  Should be an easy swap, engine mounts will even match up.   Will also bolt up to a 727 or 518.   The 518 is a nice unit to swap out as it is the same gearing as a 727, but has overdrive.  The tail shaft is shorter, so you'd probably need to move the tranny/frame crossmember forward and get the drive shaft extended.   You can also configure the 518 to hit overdrive via pressure switch, no computer needed.
